connecting the dots.
I’ve been finding the commentary about the “eat wild” feat kinda surprising. Many people seem to be having a very hard time figuring out how to stay away from processed foods — and some don’t even seem to quite understand what that really means. Ok, yes, we know I’m a little OCD about the “rules” of each challenge (to the point where I’ll email...

the thrill of eating
Very few of us have a healthy relationship with food. Some have healthier ones than others, but in general, a lot of our time is consumed with food thoughts. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say that many of us are actually addicted to the eating / dieting / guilt roller-coaster. Feeling crappy? Oooooh that cookie looks great! Yummmm that was delicious! Feeling stressed? Ooooohhh salty,...

a visit to rouge tomate
My boyfriend and I went to Rouge Tomate yesterday for dinner, courtesy of the SOcial Workout October Challenge (he won a giftcard to the restaurant!) . First off: THANK YOU, SW! What an amazing meal it was! Even just walking into the place we knew we were in for a treat - a very simple, modern , yet colorful design was an essential reflection of also the type of meal we would be enjoying. Even...

By Lauren Cox
Those soda fountain machines found in restaurants and fast food joints may be squirting out liquids contaminated with fecal bacteria, a small study found. Whether it was self-serve or behind the counter, nearly half of all sodas dispensed from a sample of 30 machines in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia had coliform bacteria...

yup. still 'caving' it.
So, I’m still going Paleo and going strong! The changes have been tremendous and super-encouraging…not only do I generally feel better, but my digestion has improved, my skin doesn’t feel as dry (which is a HUGE problem for me in the winter months), and it looks like the skin on my face is clearer and more healthy-looking. I haven’t been hungry, ever, and in fact am...

paleo-rific!
As I mentioned previously, I started reading The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain and it’s been incredibly eye-opening. I’ve already given a short summary of the basic premise of the type of diet advocated in this book, so I won’t go into details. But, for the past three days I’ve been easing my way into the diet and I’m absolutely astonished by the immediate improvement...

how to make it happen.
I’m pretty sure most of us, even if we haven’t made concrete resolutions, have a pretty good sense of what we hope to accomplish in the coming months. And, in the beginning of the new year, as we review the progress we’ve made over the last year (or lack thereof), those new goals and expectations become important once again. On my trip home from Maine, I read a very interesting article in my...

to go cave or not to go cave.
So, after reading this article in the NY Times, my boyfriend became kind of fixated on the idea of changing his diet and “going paleo.” The Paleo diet, also referred to as the “Stone Age Diet”, “Cave Man Diet” or the “Hunter-Gatherer Diet,” is the type of diet on which man supposedly evolved and proponents of this diet claim that it has all major...

my plate's overflowing.
I’ve put a lot on my plate and honestly I’m a little worried about it: I’m training for the NYC 1/2 marathon, there’s a 99% chance that I’m signing up for the Ragnar Relay (teams of 12 people run the close to 200 miles from Woodstock, NY to the Bronx in a relay-style…BAD-ASS), I’m about to set the start-date for another 2-week bootcamp, I’m doing...

limbo.
I’m in this weird limbo right now. On the one hand the intuitive eating thing makes total sense – I mean, an obsession with what you should and shouldn’t be eating to the detriment of feeding your body what it actually asks for just sounds like trouble – but at the same time, I’m very much a believer that by controlling what I eat and how much I move, I can control the outcome of my weight too....

one size fits all, as long you're skinny.
I recently finished reading “Intuitive Eating” by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. I randomly came across it and, since I have some weird food worries, I thought this might give me some insight into how to stop obsessing. I really had no expectations for this book. Well, it turns out that it was quite eye-opening.
As we all know, the U.S. is obsessed with weight and the diet industry rakes in...

melt-down.
So, I had a mini-meltdown today. Well, not so mini actually. It’s after nights of poor choices, that I always get incredibly angry and frustrated with myself. I feel bloated from the alcohol and late-night crappy food. I’m tired. And, I start obsessing. I start obsessing about the calories consumed and I start wondering why I do this to myself. I’ve worked so incredibly hard to...

SocialWorkout.com has played a huge role in keeping me motivated to push myself every day, try new activities, get out of my comfort zone, and just not take myself too seriously! It’s been tons of fun, I’ve met amazing people through it, including my race-loving, adventurer boyfried, who’s pretty much up for trying ANYTHING…uhm.. we did pole dancing together last...

Getting there.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been on a journey. A journey that most people can relate to and have also probably been on – perhaps not as obsessively as me, but certainly at least as a tourist. Every day I’m trying to make myself better – on many different levels, of course – but this blog will chronicle my journey as someone who’s had pretty deep-seated body image issues in the past, and...
